Buyers and media were invited to view the spring 2012 collections of our resident and alumni designers, who were showcased at our Fashion Focus Show last month. The Chicago Fashion Incubator is taking the world by storm! With our sartorial machine's success gaining steam, we are pleased to see that the media has taken an interest in us---call us the einstein of the fashion and retail industry! We were the subject of an article written by an organization called Changing Gears.

Changing Gears is a public media project interested in exploring the economic transformation of the industrial Midwest, through the stories of people driving and experiencing this change. Our Executive Director Lara Miller was interviewed for the article, as was past DIR Stephanie Kuhr (creative mind behind her line Dottie's Delights) and Donaldo Smith (main man of his brand Killian Gui).

On Monday, June 27th, The Salon Series will be featuring CFI's Executive Director Lara Miller for an exclusive dinner soiree in Wrigleyville. The series will spotlight the limited, oversized bamboo/organic cotton blend scarf collection created out of the brilliant collaboration between Lara Miller and JC Steinbrunner---the founder of The Salon Series. Each individual scarf from the collection will be hand-silk screened with Miller and Steinbrunner's sketches and will come to life in the following colors: sage, dusk red, cream, light blue, and dark blue. The evening will kick off with refreshing bubbly, a to-die-for trunkshow, AND a reduced 30% off on specials and special orders on the 2011 hand-loomed collections. The Four P's

Prada, Pucci, Proenza, Posen.....? Can't keep a girl from dreaming.

Sorry to break your fashion concentrated hearts, dear readers, but today, the four P's in question are not rooted in the above mentioned immaculate design houses. Instead, they refer to the four essential P's in fashion and retail marketing: Product. Place. Price. Promotion. Although these elements may not be as aesthetically pleasing as Prada's fall runway collection, they are still an exciting key to success in the industry!

The idea of the P's came from Nicole Rehyle of RetailMinded.com, a boutique blog and support firm for retailers and wholesalers. She explains the four P's presence (excuse the alliteration) in the industry as well as four other factors that play into fashion credibility. Hello! This is Katelyn Finn, I'll be blogging for the Chicago Fashion Incubator a bit this summer!

With social media invading our thoughts, and every answer to every question imaginable at our internet capable finger tips, I have to beg the question: how does a fashion designer take advantage of this online marketplace?

As I was writing my daily submission....POW! The idea was right under my nose (literally and figuratively) : a blog would serve as the perfect vehicle to both establish and further promote an emerging designer with his or her line. Agreeing with me on this point is Jane Hamill, a Chicago fashion professional herself. She is the founder of Jane Hamill Consulting which is a firm that works with fashion designer companies on the business side of things. On her own blog, Jane spotlighted the DOs and DON'Ts of the operational management of a fashion design blog written by Erika Gimbel, a Chicago freelance writer. As they say, "the early bird gets the worm....", but in this case, we should say: "the early bird gets a fabulous fashion preview"! This morning at the Hilton Chicago, our current DIR and past CFI alumni designers had the opportunity to showcase their pieces on the the runway at the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce Breakfast. The event, themed "Chicago: The Great Global Marketplace", highlighted the city's business driven creativity and innovation. The keynote speaker of this event was Macy's Chairman, President and CEO: Terry Lundgren who was being honored for his dedication and innovation in the retail industry. Another attendee, our city's Mayor Rahm Emanuel, spoke on issues in the Chicagoland business arena as well. CFI is honored to be apart of such an exciting Chicago event!

A graduate of the Illinois Institute of Art – Fashion Design Program, she is influenced by the dichotomy of her vibrant African heritage fused with western design sensibilities. The brightly colorful African print is the signature of Modahnik, the designs are modern, feminine and visually appealing with an underlying sexiness. The Driehaus Awards for Fashion Excellence

Tonight is a who’s who of the Chicago fashion scene: the 10th Annual Driehaus Awards for Fashion Excellence celebrates the spectacular talent coming through Chicago’s design woodwork. The evening features a runway show with looks to kill, an awards ceremony highlighting outstanding achievements in design, and a silent auction. The night’s proceeds benefit our very own CFI! We at The Chicago Fashion Incubator are always thankful for just about anything fashion related, but we are extremely honored to be the beneficiary of the Driehaus Design Initiative!

LAUNCH/CFI Party: New DIR Introduced!

LAUNCH/CFI was a smash hit success! For all of those in attendance, we are thrilled that you could join us! For those who couldn't be there, words can not explain the amazing displays of fashion that were present, but we'll do our best to set the scene:

Located on the 5th floor of 900 N. Michigan Shops, the annual CFI pop up shop was the perfect back drop to showcase the fantastic designs from both alumni designers and our new Designers in Residence (DIR) all while raising funds for our incredible organization.

Guests sipped on their choice of refreshing cocktails from Svedka along with a variety of flavors from vitaminwater and vitaminwaterzero served by Blue Plate Catering. KIND Snacks were paired with Barefoot Wines along with tasty bites provided by Frankie's Scaloppine and treats from King Cafe. A lucky group of Gilt City Gives ticket holders were able to shop the store and meet the designers before a crowd of over 350 of Chicago's fashion media and industry insiders came to celebrate. A chic crowd added to the the visually spectacular main event: the CFI garments. To put it plainly: the level of sartorial perfection was at an all time high.

Equally as exciting as the aesthetic of the designs sported by FORD models cat walking around the pop up shop, was the formal introduction of our new class of DIR:

To say the LAUNCH/CFI attendees took an intense interest in the designers' original pieces would be an understatement! The new DIR hit a fashion home run---three cheers for CFI! Congratulations to our six new Designers in Residence: we are so proud of you and look forward to your great success to come!

Over all the LAUNCH/CFI event was an enormous success and there is only more fashionable entertainment to come: exclusive trunk shows, fashion shows and other fabulous events. Partners in Fashion Crime

In keeping with our Chicago community based mission, we eagerly jumped at the chance to partner with Columbia College’s Fashion Studies Department.

Only being a few weeks into their Chicago Fashion Incubator experience, our six Designers in Residence have the incredible opportunity to pair with Columbia students enrolled in a course titled “Decision Making: Fashion Management.” This class focuses on the fundamentals of critical business decision making that are necessary in developing a competitive edge in today’s fashion/retail business market. Groups of three to four students pair with one of the six CFI designers to perfect the designers’ business plan. At the semester’s end, the student teams will give presentations highlighting the most relevant needs of their field work. This symbiotic relationship offers designers the benefit of Columbia’s academic influence, while simultaneously giving the students the opportunity to get hands on experience in the fashion/retail industry.

Good luck to both our CFI designers and Columbia students---can’t wait to see the finished product!

Designers in Residence Move Into CFI Studio

Exciting new changes are under way at the Chicago Fashion Incubator! Just this morning, our fresh faced and bushy tailed 2011 Designers in Residence stepped into the studio. The smell of freshly cut fabrics filling the air, sewing machines waiting patiently to be used, and brilliant ideas of beautifully tailored jackets and exquisite gowns bounce in the heads of our newly formed group. The clean and open work room awaits!

LAUNCH/CFI Pop Up Shop

Our 2011 Designers in Residence (DIR) have been chosen and we are so happy to start a new chapter with them under our beautifully feathered wing! The six new designers will be given the opportunity to learn the economics, marketing and merchandising of fashion from industry experts as well as mentors from Macy’s and the broader fashion community.

To celebrate the exciting new additions to our team, CFI will partner with the 900 North Michigan Shops on a pop-up shop to showcase the achievements of the alumni designers and to announce the next DIR through a dedicated retail store and series of exclusive events and trunk shows. The pop-up shop will spotlight CFI designers from the last four years starting on Thursday, March 17 through Saturday, April 23, 2011 and will be located on Level 5 of the 900 North Michigan Shops. The pop-up shop hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. each Thursday through Saturday and 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

The new class of designers will be be formally announced at the kick off opening LAUNCH/CFI, a fundraiser and reception, on Tuesday, March 15 at 6 p.m. in the pop up shop. CFI at Fashion Focus: In Review

CFI designers started off Fashion Focus last week to rave reviews at the Chicago Fashion Incubator Designers Past & Present, presented by Macy's and CS Magazine. Thirteen of CFI's current and alumni designers showed at the event to a packed tent in Millennium Park. Notable attendees included Commissioner of Public Affairs Lois Weisberg and "King of Nightlife" Billy Dec.

The designers' spring 2011 collections were called "sexy" by the Chicago Sun-Times and the "highlight" of Fashion Focus by ChicagoNow.

Application Deadline is November 8

Eligibility:

Reside in the Chicagoland Area - which includes the following counties: Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and Will.

Be 21 years of age or older.

Provide a minimum of three (3) images of your garments. Ideally work that best reflects your vision for your brand. If called back for an interview plan to show these samples.

Either plan to start, or have already started, a fashion business in the City of Chicago.

Submit an application fee of $75.00.

Be able to commit to CFI completely, utilizing all available resources, similar to a full-time job.

About the Program: This Chicago Fashion Incubator is a home to a year-long program that provides six designers with the resources, workspace, showroom, curriculum, and mentoring to grow their business while establishing networks in the community. The designer's also have the opportunity to showcase their lines at local events and fashion shows. Along with all of this the designers get a chance to learn the business of fashion to ensure they can successfully launch their own company.

CFI current and alumni designers present at Italian Expo

Visit the Italian Expo at Navy Pier to see fashion shows featuring amazing Chicago designers including CFI current and alumni Designers in Residence! Eight local designers will compete in the Fashion Competition Runway Shows for the title of Italian Expo Fashion Icon.

The public is invited to vote for their favorite designer during the Friday and Saturday shows, and the top four picks will compete on Sunday before a panel of high-profile judges.

CFI designers Miriam Cecilia Carlson, C/FAN and Agga B. will be showcasing their talent at this local event.

The winner will be announced in CS Magazine on Sunday, September 19. The lucky designer will win a free trip to Italy's top fashion school, the Polimoda Institute of Design in Florence.

The stakes are high so attend the shows, vote and support our local designers!

While at first glance the Chicago Fashion Incubator might seem to be just a haven for designers to create beautiful garments, there is actually much, much more happening here. The designers are learning the essential components to developing a successful company.

Lucky for us, we are in a city who embraces our small businesses. Chicago's office of the City Treasurer is hosting its ninth Small Business Expo which will give a number of workshops to cover topics important to local entrepreneurs such as our Designers in Residence.

Party at The Loft!

The 2010 DIR and the City of Chicago had a blast on Friday night at the final night of a three-evening event at the pop-up Don Julio Loft at 1956 W. Grand Ave. Don Julio provided three featured drinks for the evening including their "Can't-Pass-Up Ginger Margarita!" The designers displayed their designs which were inspired by the different bottles of Don Julio! Amazing!

The DIR also had the opportunity to showcase their collections in a fashion show complete with Spanish-inspired runway music, gorgeous Ford models, and the unseen organized chaos of backstage!

Shiny Toy Guns gave a rockin' performance and have quickly become a Chicago favorite in the fashion scene. Upstairs, guests waited in line to take their costumed group photo in the free photo booth and eagerly waited for their on scene screen printed t-shirt from Black Market Caviar while they shopped CFI alum's, Anna Hovet t-shirt line.

Future Founders at CFI

Future Founders, Stitches Fashion Program and CEC made their annual visit to The Chicago Fashion Incubator to partake in a panel discussion with our six Designers in Residence. The discussion centered around how to start and operate a business, potential obstacles and available resources.

Future Founders is a program that helps motivated high school students by leading them through four hands-on areas of discovery:

1. Exposure to the benefits of careers in entrepreneurship

2. Mentoring by entrepreneurs, sponsors, partner organizations and the CEC to help students create and present viable business plans

3. Participation in business plan competitions

4. Continued entrepreneurial exposure for the program’s top students through a summer business camp

The Stitches Fashion Program is a program run by the Chicagoland Entrepreneurial Center that helps fashion entrepreneurs through advisory services, business plan counseling and mentoring to address the unusual difficulties that fashion business people face.

Make Me a Model

Mario Tricoci is hosting it's second annual "Mario, Make Me A Model" Contest and CFI is excited to be partnering!

At the end of August six finalists were chosen and paired with our DIR.

Jacquelyn Davis with Ashley Zygmunt for Zamrie; Natalie Feliciano with Jess Audey for Audey; Jennifer Harrison with Cynthia Ryba; Veronica Kaczmarek with Catherine Furio for Furio; Cori Munro with Nora del Busto; and bringing back one of our DIR from the beginning of the year, Brian Kerwin with Alonzo Jackson for Fashion Geek. Plus one runner-up, Tatiana, was paired with our DIR Anna Hovet!

The models will spend six weeks preparing to walk the runway at the 2009 Fashion Focus fashion show in October wearing pieces created by our DIR. Our designers' collections will act as inspiration for the finalists' Mario Tricoci make-overs. The DIR will work with the finalists on a photo shoot for Chicago Magazine while meeting with them to fit and style their looks leading up to the show.

We had a great workshop on creating press releases today with Andrea Schwartz, V.P of Media Relations and Cause Marketing for Macy's Inc. along with Brooke Vane, Public Relations Specialist for the Chicago Department of Tourism.

Their most important tip?

Make sure you have a true reason to send out a release and that you have an avenue to sell your wares. There's nothing worst than a customer reading a great story about your wonderful collection, but then not being able to purchase it!

It's all the buzz here at CFI as Mayor Richard M. Daley and Macy's announces Tommy Hilfiger as the Master Designer for the Chicago Fashion Incubator here at Macy's on State! This announcement came along with the news that Fashion Focus Chicago was returning for a fifth year in October, an awesome opportunity for local Chicago designers to be featured in Millennium Park.

Tommy Hilfiger comes to CFI and the DIR and alumni got to take advantage of Mr. Hilfiger's industry experience in a round table discussion, seek his advice, and discuss key issues that will directly effect them and their businesses. What an important day!

Small Biz Workshop

Special thanks goes to Esther Barron, a Clinical Assistant Professor of Law and representative from the BLUHM Legal Clinic and Small Business Opportunity Center (SBOC), and her fellow students for connecting with the CFI and helping our DIR to understand the legal realm of their designing business.

The SBOC provides affordable legal services to entrpreneurs and nonprofit organizations to help them make the right legal choices for their business to include trademark registration, copyright protection, and business license.

The workshop was invaluable to the DIR, we can't wait until their next visit!

Welcome Future Founders 2009!

The Incubator was visited by Future Founders on June 18th, a program launched by the Chicago Entrepreneurial Center in 2005 to give motivated high school students the opportunity to learn about and experience entrepreneurship in the Chicago-land community.

At the Incubator, the students were given the opportunity to ask the DIR, who have first hand knowledge of owning their own businesses, questions about how to get started, problems they have faced, and pointers on how to overcome these obstacles.

What a great opportunity to learn from each other!

The DIR attended a workshop taught by the ever generous, Kathy Chrucky, about creating Technical Specification Packages. These skills will become extremely useful when they start the production of their garments and will communicate to the manufacturer the sizes, measurments, grading specs, trims, and labeling instructions.

Wow. What a past week here at The Chicago Fashion Incubator (CFI)...

On May 11th our Designers in Residence (DIR) learned all about costing their garments. Costing is obviously essential to any great design business, but not valuing products correctly seems to be the biggest mistake that all new designers make. Thanks to the amazing Kathy Chrucky the designers have been hard at work breaking down their pricing structures.

On May 13th the DIR had their second Marketing Planning session with the incredible Ken Walter. SWOT analysis, competitive analysis, and target market psychographics are just a few of the great exercises the designers have been working on.

Today the DIR and I headed over to ORBA to learn all about Quickbooks - a near perfect tool for any small business, especially for a new designer to manage their accounting.

Ahhhhhh. Just another week here at CFI!

The Chicago Fashion Incubator would like to welcome Anna Hovet as a designer in residence for the 2009 - 2010 class. Anna will be taking the place of Alonzo Jackson whose line, Fashion Geek, has enjoyed enormous success in the past several months. With a solid business support structure in place, the Incubator board agreed that they could best support Alonzo externally and on an as-needed basis, making room for a designer who was at a more crucial stage in their career. Anna Hovet

With a passion to add beautiful and interesting things to the world, Anna Hovet moved from North Dakota to Chicago in 2003. She attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she earned her BFA with a focus in design.

Anna’s determination to be a well-rounded designer led her to Chicago’s well-known store Akira, where she worked as a stylist and fashion show coordinator while in college. After graduating, she was hired by Kids Headquarters where she designed layette for Ecko, Calvin Klein, Kenneth Cole, and Target.

Anna is currently launching her first full collection – Anna Hovet Fall 2009 for women, and developing her newest concept – Hovet for men. She is also selling custom-made pieces to individual clients and at a local boutique.

Beyond designing, she freelances as a stylist and frequents art, music, fashion, and social events to evaluate developing trends and anticipate their usability.

Nora del Busto

Nora del Busto, a Michigan native with a passion for architecture, loves to design structured garments with precise detail and manipulating plain fabrics into extraordinary one-of-a-kind pieces.

Nora initially worked as a lawyer after receiving her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan and her Juris Doctor degree from Loyola University Chicago School of Law. After working as an attorney for a few years, Del Busto decided she wanted to spend less time in the courtroom and more time exploring her creative side.

Del Busto recently graduated from the International Academy of Design and Technology and is currently working at Cintas as an apparel design assistant. Cynthia Ryba

Cynthia Ryba, who began sewing and creating clothes at the age of 16, offers a unique alternative to everyday dressing. With great attention to detail, Ryba’s expertise lies with using conventional materials in an unconventional way. Molding and shaping fabric in an organic fashion, her silhouettes are fluid and imaginative transcending the fleeting, temporal trends of the day.

Past professional experience includes work as an International Accessories Buyer for the major retailer Claire’s Accessories (Japan based stores), an internship with Cynthia Rowley and work as a freelance milliner for musician Lenny Kravitz. In addition, she is a Fashion Group International award winner as well as a Richard Driehaus Annual Fashion Show participant and winner.

Ryba is a graduate of the International Academy of Design and Technology in Chicago where she earned a degree in Fashion Design. Ashley Zygmunt, a Chicago native, began pursuing her interest in fashion at the School of the Art Institute Chicago, through the early college program and continuing at Purdue University in the Apparel Design and Technology program. In spring of 2007, she became the first student in the program to study abroad in Hong Kong at Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Past professional experience includes design and production internships with Zac Posen, and Peter Som where she worked through two Mercedes Benz Fashion weeks. In addition, Zigmunt has freelanced for Li and Fung USA, in the Oxford collections division of the company, where she assisted with Norma Kamali for Wal-Mart, Just My Size, a plus sized label, and White Stag Fast Fashion, a high style mass marketed label.

Ashley graduated in May 2008 and is eager to elevate the fashion industry in her favorite city, Chicago.

Jess Audey began her sewing career in Cleveland, OH at the age of fourteen and spent most of high school sewing her own skirts and prom dresses. After moving to Chicago in 2001, Audey began to design and sell her own dresses to those interested in her luring style. Heavily influenced by her experience with tactile upholstery fabrics and custom orders, Audey strives to combine the perfect fabric and design for each of her garments.

Alonzo Jackson or "Zoe," as he's fondly known, has taken the underground streetwear scene by storm. The Chicago south side native, who's mascot began with a quick sketch of a duck when he was seventeen, has grown into the face of the brand "Fashion Geek". Mixing contemporary, classic, and urban styling with a witty sense of humor, Alonzo has established a key customer base for Fashion Geek which includes Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, Jermaine Dupree, Jagged Edge and most recently, in the XXL magazine on Young Jeezy. In addition, Fashion Geek Clothing has been featured in publications including Complex Magazine, Antenna and New City. In 2008, Jackson was accepted into the SLATE show at the International Magic Fashion Tradeshow in Las Vegas where he exhibited Fashion Geek Clothing's 2008 Fall/Winter Collection for worldwide buyers. Everything Jackson has learned about fashion design, production and manufacturing has been from pure fascination with the process. It was a celebration to wish the class of 2008 Chicago Fashion Incubator designers well, and to say hello to six designers who will be occupying their studio space within the offices of Macy's on State Street.
